Friday Funny – Mann Overboard!

Maybe Mr. Mann is still mad at Dr. Moore for his take down of Mann’s friend that other stellar PhD Mr. Fruitfly on SUN NEWS up here in CANADA

Watts Up With That?

Dr. Mann doesn’t seem to know who he’s labeling as a “garden variety troll”.

This is probably just a conditioned reflex on his part, since anyone who disagrees with the omniscient Mann is eventually labeled a troll, but in this case, Dr. Mann’s annoyance gives the extra distinction of “garden variety troll”. Observe:

Neil Young’s Hiroshima – Exhibit #10 in the Drama Queen Files

Well said Donna.

Big Picture News, Informed Analysis

Rockstar’s rhetoric about Canada’s oil sands is intemperate, offensive, and ill-informed.

When an argument is intellectually shallow, its proponents reach for emotionalism and over-the-top language. The latest embarrassing example comes from Canadian-born musician Neil Young.

Although he lives on a 1,500-acre estate in California, Young has spent the past week on an anti-oil sands music tour north of the border. The stated goal of these benefit concerts is to raise money for a legal challenge to the expansion of the oil sands.

Ostensibly, Young is concerned about the health and treaty rights of First Nation individuals who live near Fort McMurray, a community of roughly 65,000 in the northern part of the Canadian province of Alberta. But the real target, the “elephant in the room” as Young himself describes it, is human-caused global warming.

When someone says Fort McMurray is “up North,” they aren’t kidding. Alberta’s two main…

Well done Steve ;>)

Real Science

I spent the evening comparing USHCN V1 and V2 graphs, and discovered a huge discrepancy between their V1 and V2 adjustments.

This is their current US graph. Note that there is a discontinuity at 1998, which doesn’t look right. Globally, temperatures plummeted in 1999-2000, but they didn’t in the US graph.

Climate at a Glance | Time Series

It doesn’t look right, because they made a huge change going from USHCN V1 to V2.

In V1 they adjusted recent temperatures upwards (thin line below) and made little adjustment to older temperatures.

GHCN Global Gridded Data

But when they switched to V2, they started adjusting older temperatures downwards, and left post-2000 temperatures more or less intact. This created a huge jump (greater than one degree) downwards for all years prior to 2000. You can see what they did in the animation below.

Blue line is thermometer data.  Thin red line is…

The Invisible Judith Curry

thank you both for the truth you put out there.

Big Picture News, Informed Analysis

A bona fide climate scientist tells US Senators we have no idea whether human-caused global warming will be a serious problem. The media doesn’t report it.

Dr. Judith Curry has spent 30 years studying the climate. She currently chairs the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Testifying before a committee of the US Senate yesterday, this even-tempered, matter-of-fact professor made a number of remarks the public deserves to hear. For example, she referred to human-caused, greenhouse-gas related global warming as:

a theory whose basic mechanism is well understood, but whose magnitude is highly uncertain. [bold added]

Hiring an appliance repair man involves a similarly well understood mechanism. He performs a task, I give him money. The fact that I’ve had to call him is less important than the magnitude of the situation. How much repairing will he need to do before my washing…

Cause of ‘the pause’ in global warming

well done Professor that will leave a mark. ;>)

Watts Up With That?

Guest essay byDon J. Easterbrook, Dept of Geology, Western Washington University

The absence of global warming for the past 17 years has been well documented. It has become known as “the pause.” and has been characterized as the “biggest mystery in climate science,” but, in fact, it really isn’t a mystery at all, it was predicted in 1999 on the basis of consistent, recurring patterns of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and global climate.

Perhaps the easiest way to understand the causal relationship between global warming/cooling and the PDO and AMO is to recount how these correlations were discovered. In 1999, while studying recent glacial fluctuations on Mt. Baker in the North Cascade Range, a pattern of recurring advances and retreats became apparent. In the wee hours one night, I came across a 1997 paper by Mantua, et al., “A Pacific…

The coming shape of 2014.

I’ll do my part.

About three years ago, I compared the ongoing plunge in any belief in global warming as being akin to the death of a belief system. In essence, it is a five stage process of denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. It covered what can only be termed the true believers, not the politicians, or the crooks simply riding the gravy train nor establishment climate science, which is just hanging on in there to protect its research funding.

While different people go through the main sequence at their own rates, I think it’s a fair assessment that the majority of true believers are well through the denial stage. The successive disasters of last year such as the utter failure of COP19, the chopping back of subsidies, the culling of environmental journalists, the Australian electoral rout and the debacle of AR5, can have left no doubt in even the most…

Ship of Fools

Welcome back Steve very nice take down of this farce of lost ice.

Climate Audit

Like many others, I’ve been intrigued by the misadventures of the Ship of Fools. Dozens of tourist vessels visit the Antarctic without becoming trapped by ice. So it’s entirely valid to inquire into why the one tourist vessel led by a “climate scientist” became trapped by ice.

The leader of the expedition, Chris Turney (also a secondary Climategate correspondent and co-signer of Lewandowsky’s multisignatory letter in the Conversation), claimed that the incident could not have been predicted. He said that they were trapped by a sudden “breakout” of multi-year ice (“fast ice”) that had previously been part of the ice shelf and that there was no way that they could have anticipated this. Turney’s claim has been uncritically accepted by the climate community e.g. Turner of the British Antarctica Survey here.

However, like other recent claims by Turney, this claim is bogus. In fact, Turney was trapped by sea ice…
